Mathematics
Required Level 1
Arithmetic is the foundation of mathematics.
You will learn the correct way to perform the fundamental mathematical operations, and how to calculate rates, ratios and proportion.
This module will give you the confidence to work credibly and logically with everyday numbers.
Algebra is all about identifying different factors that are relevant in real life situations.
It gives us the tools to express the relationships between them in mathematical terms, providing the building blocks for developing algorithms.
Learning algebra develops your critical thinking, which includes reasoning, patterns, logic and problem solving. You will learn how to create and solve equations for real life problems. Algebra is a pre-requisite for Data science and Finance.
Data Science is all about understanding what data is telling us about a reality situation.
In this module you will learn about the collection, analysis and interpretation of data. You will learn how to effectively communicate insights from your data and ways to present data results. You will learn to calculate and interpret mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance, range, interquartile range and relative frequency. You will learn how to draw pie charts, bar graphs, histograms, frequency polygons, box and whisker diagrams and ogives.
This course incorporates the use of Excel for efficient, tech-savvy data handling.
Optional
(Prerequisites: Required Level 1)
Financial mathematics focuses on real-world financial literacy and personal finance.
You will learn about financial documents and tariffs, interest rates, depreciation, personal income tax, inflation and indices.
After completing this module, you will feel more confident about managing your finances, comparing investments, dealing with your income tax and understanding how inflation affects financial decisions.
We live in a 3D world. In this Geometry course you will learn how to use numbers to appropriately describe and manipulate space and shapes.
You will develop perceptual skills and enhance your ability to think visually.
Level 2
(Prerequisites: Required Level 1)
Arithmetic Intermediate explores sequences and series.
Sequences are chains of elements in which repetition of any various kinds is allowed. Series are manipulations of sequences.
Sequences and series occur both naturally in the world around us and are fundamental tenents in economics, finance and science. You will learn about their applications in the real world.
Algebra Intermediate investigates the characteristics and behaviour of various functions, both graphically and algebraically.
You will learn to differentiate between functions based on how equations and graphs model the information, and how changing the parameters of functions or applying transformations affect their behaviour and graphs. You will learn to identify and determine the equation of a function from given data values or characteristics, and to draw the graphs of these functions without having to do so point-by-point.
These skills will save valuable time in data evaluation and you will be able to evaluate whether the use of technology is representing your data correctly.
This module culminates in the interpretation of multiple graphs represented on the same axes system and the relative relationships between them. You will be able to use the knowledge gained in this module to model and solve real life word problems and leverage linear programming as a basic optimisation strategy.
